San Carlos was incorporated as a city on July 8, 1925, emerging from property development in the early 1900s. The downtown district developed along the main commercial corridors, anchored by local services, schools, and civic institutions that served residents of the growing peninsula community. Like many peninsula towns incorporated in the 1920s, San Carlos' downtown was built as a walkable neighborhood center.

Today, San Mateo County Libraries operates the San Carlos branch library as a community gathering place and resource center. The library hosts programming including educational workshops, maker activities, children's events, and a growing makerspace designed to serve residents of all ages. The library is part of a county system that has served peninsula communities since 1922.

A downtown rooted in a century of local life reflects the stability that families seek when they plant themselves in one place. Term life insurance, renewed over the decades as circumstances change, is part of that stability—the commitment to the household that will remain if you are not there.
